Group’s Purpose:
The Microsoft Licensing Tax team is responsible for ensuring Microsoft Licensing, GP complies with all excise tax responsibilities within the United States and Canada. The Microsoft Licensing, GP Tax Team is also responsible for supporting the Commercial Licensing revenue processing team relating to tax exempt transactions and providing strategic transaction tax planning relating to diverse business initiatives with the goal of minimizing the company’s transaction tax liabilities.
Job Description:
In this key position, you will join Microsoft Licensing, GP’s highly respected tax organization as a Tax Manager, which offers the ability to drive change and positively impact the business. In addition, the position offers excellent career growth potential longer-term.
The successful candidate will work with the Excise Tax Team to prepare and file state and local excise tax returns, including sales and use tax, business and occupation tax, property tax, and business license tax returns as well as managing excise tax audits. Furthermore, the successful candidate will work directly with business partners, field teams and end customers to resolve customer tax questions and issues.
Requirements / Qualifications:
- Working with functional areas of the business and Corporate Tax to improve processes and proactively assess the tax impacts of changes in business models and practices
- Performing complex tax research and planning within area of responsibility and develop related implementation plans
- Ensuring compliance with state and local tax laws and regulations
- Management of excise and property tax examinations by state and local tax authorities
- Performing complex tax research and planning within area of responsibility and develop related implementation plans
- Performing excise and property tax planning and compliance activities relating to acquisitions, mergers, reorganizations, and liquidations
- Monitoring, reviewing and analyzing current tax legislation within area of responsibility and its impact on Microsoft Licensing, GP
- Providing tax advice, guidance and training to groups across Microsoft Licensing, GP with regard to excise and property tax matters
- Maintaining systems and processes to ensure excise and property tax compliance in each jurisdiction
- Working closely with the Tax Information Technology Team and other internal organizations to modify compliance systems and processes as required
- Developing a thorough working knowledge of internal reporting and tracking tools and various excise tax software programs including Vertex O Series, SAP, CCH Intelliconnect, RIA Checkpoint, Taxware, and CorpSales
- Assist in determining excise tax policy and goals in conjunction with Excise Tax Team senior management
- Strong written and verbal communication skills required
Preferences:
The recommended qualifications for the ideal candidate include:
- Bachelor's in Accounting - CPA or MST is required.
- A minimum of 5-7 years tax experience with a large corporation or a combination of large corporation and Big 4 experience with a preferred concentration in multi-state excise and property taxes
- Excellent organization skills and the ability to handle a large number of deliverables on a complex, relatively inflexible schedule
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines (may require unpredictable evening and weekend hours)
- Excellent management and analytical skills
- Ability to collaborate well with a wide variety of groups and individuals
- Strong PC experience with proficiency in Excel and Word and understanding of Access · Sarbanes-Oxley compliance experience
